Contents Page Drafts

Draft 1:

Above is a very basic,  incomplete version of my contents page. It is my first draft and although I hadn't done much on the page, you can see my house style is starting to come through as well as the iconic colour scheme.

Draft 2:

Above is my second draft of my contents page. I have created my editorial in the top right hand corner and I have created the white columns for the text to go into. At first I wanted the images to be down the centre of the page but I realised that this wasn't sticking to the grid theme which most contents pages should stick to. I included the mast head in the corner (left) to see what it looked like.

Draft 3:

Above is the third draft of my contents page. I changed my mind to where I wanted the images and decided to have them at the bottom in a sort of square formation to cluster them all together. I like the way I have used black borders around the outside to make the images stand out. I kept to the same white columns for the text.

Draft 4:

Above is the fourth draft of my contents page. I chose to include a brown box behind the images in the grid to keep them all together more and also to include another colour onto the page. The brown colour fits well with the colour scheme on this page and adds to the overall house style and effect. I have kept the editorial the same throughout each draft as I am pleased with it.

Final Draft:

Above is my final and finished draft of my contents page. I included a small image of the front cover on the 'on the cover' section so people can refer back to this and so the theme is iconic. I decided to bring back the masthead symbol on the contents page as it kept my page iconic like previously said but so the theme was consistent on each page. I am really pleased with the overall colour scheme, images and style.

Capzles Photography

Above is a copy of my Capzles presentation including all of the photography I took for my music magazine, both research and production. I only used a selection of images but wanted to present all of my work. I was aiming for a vintage/indie effect on my photos so when I edited them on Photoshop or InDesign I sometimes put a vintage-style filter on them to alter the colours and theme. In the photoshoots which took place, I used:
- Camera
- Tripod
- Photography Studio
- Lighting
- Blue Screen
- Props
- Models
- Costumes

Final Draft of Double Page Spread

Below is a copy of my final draft of my double page spread. Later on I may decide to change something on this page but currently I feel it is my final draft as I do not need to alter anything. I am really pleased with the headline for the double page spread as it matches the style of the headline on my front cover and this makes the theme iconic to the reader. I really like the picture I have used because at first, 'Lorna Elsie' was facing away from the text, but using image rotation on photoshop, I was able to alter the way she was facing so it looked like she was facing the text instead of facing away and I think this looks better. I also really like the white box text underneath the headline saying 'I can still hear them screaming my name, it's so surreal' and I chose this quotation from the article because I think it is the best one to draw the reader in and encourage them to read the article. I have used the masthead image in the top left of the page to keep the theme running throughout all pages.

Final Draft of Contents Page

Here is the final draft of my contents page. I have tried to keep to the same colour scheme as the front cover so that the readers will easily link both pages together. The background and the blocks behind each title for the content are both the same colour. I have also used the technique of semi transparent blocks behind some of the text such as the word 'contents' and the text with the images in the bottom left hand corner. This links with the same technique which I used on the cover page. I really like the font which I have used on this page, and I like the way I have copied the masthead and included it on this page to keep the theme iconic and consistent.

Cover Drafts and Final Cover

Draft One:

The colour scheme is really consistent on this draft but the kickers are really simple and there are no cover lines. I like the font which I have used on the kickers and the one cover line as it is consistent. The headline looks too much like a poster and not like a magazine and this needed to be improved.

Draft Two:

I really like the way I have changed the headline dramatically to the black and faded white to achieve a more magazine-look. I have kept the colour scheme the same but added cover lines underneath each kicker to give the magazine more features and to look more busy. The top right of the page is too empty and needed to be improved.

Draft Three:

I have kept most things the same from the previous draft but added the top right hand corner feature as a secondary lead and another image. I like the image I have used as it is varying the artists on the page and giving the magazine more interesting features. I used the faded white box behind the text to keep the theme consistent. I hadn't included my tag line at this point.

Final Draft:

Everything has been kept the same on the final draft from the previous one apart from the issue number and date has been moved to the bottom of the page to leave space for the tag line which is keeping the same colour scheme to make sure my cover is iconic.

Audience Profiling - Readership Document

Below is a copy of my final audience profiling sheet. I have tried to include the various items which I feel would be linked with my target audience of 'Distinct' magazine. As you can see I have varied my colour scheme to make the document stand out, but the background colours and the masthead have stayed iconic to the theme of the magazine.

Draft of contents

Below is a draft of my contents page.
It is not yet completed.

Drafts and Final Draft of Magazine Cover

Below is the first draft of my magazine cover. As you can see there is quite a lot of white space behind the main image and I firstly wanted to improve this. The headline and masthead make the cover look a bit like a poster and not music-related enough. I like the colour scheme which I have created, but I think I could add more features onto the cover and make the headline stand out more.

Below is the final draft of my magazine cover. As you can see I changed the headline a lot because I didn't think it looked like a magazine enough, it looked more like a poster. I kept the colour scheme running through on the kickers and the masthead, but by changing the colour of the headline, it drew more attention to it by making it stand out against the lighter background. The tag line which I created is easily seen from a distance and I incorporated another colour into the scheme which went with the mustard colour which I'd already created. Overall I am really pleased with the whole effect of the cover. I think it suits my audience really well and the colour scheme makes it iconic to the type of music I am including in my magazine.

Indie Music Magazine Research

Below are the three pages of my research for my indie music magazine research. I have mainly found images relating to the indie music genre such as bands and solo artists in the same genre. I also did some background research idea on a well-known indie rock band 'Mumford and Sons' to get an idea of the types of things I could include when I create a 'band' for my magazine.

Professional Photo Shoot Planning

Below is the page of Professional Photo Planning which I created so I could understand what types of photos I planned to photograph for my music magazine. The four main types of photos which I planned to obtain are the cover photo, photos to go on the cover (graphical features), a contents page image and a double page spread image. Below you can see what techniques I hoped to use by taking these photos, and how I aimed to achieve this.

Professional Music Photography Analysis

Below is a PowerPoint which I have created as part of my music magazine research. It shows some of the images from music photography that I like and why. I hoped that this research would help me create a specific genre which I would base my magazine on. On the Powerpoint, I have also recorded where the photo I chose could be placed - such as a double page spread or the contents page.

Music Magazine Layout Ideas

Below is a PowerPoint of the two design ideas which I had for the basic layout of the magazine. I tried to include the main features of a music magazine, such as the main headlines, anchorage, a plug, a flash and graphic features. Both design ideas include various iconic features like a masthead and a main image, but they differ because I have positioned the components differently to try and see what looks better.

College Magazine Evaluation

Below is a Prezi PowerPoint of the evaluation of my college magazine. I have outlined the improvements which I think could be made, and I have also listed some of the good points. I asked people to analyze my cover and contents page and they have suggested improvements also. I also included why I created what I did, and how this was affected by the audience research which I carried out - such as the questionnaire and internet research.

Analysing Magazine Covers

Below is a PowerPoint of some Vogue magazine covers. I have labelled the main features of the covers such as the kickers and cover lines and then found similarities between three Vogue covers using the 'rule of thirds' grid system to look at the postioning of certain features on the covers.

Music Magazine Task - Rolling Stone

'Rolling Stone' is a US based magazine which focuses on music culture, politics and popular news. It was first created by Jann Wenner in San Francisco in 1967 and has since then appealed to a wide range of people. The magazine is named after the Muddy Waters popular song - Rollin' Stone.

'Rolling Stone' features news about popular artists such as Rita Ora and Christina Aguilera but also includes information about music legends - such as John Lennon and The Beatles. This means that the magazine appeals to a wider audience as information and articles are included about a variety of different artists.

The magazine uses iconic fonts for the title of the magazine which would be recognisable to a wide range of people. The colour red of the title 'Rolling Stone' stands out against lighter backgrounds such as white or grey to capture people's attention and encourage them to take a look at the magazine's front cover, which includes a lot of persuasive writing to encourage the consumer to read it. There has been many iconic people who have been featured on the cover of 'Rolling Stone' such as Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix and also The Beatles as already mentioned.

To the left is an image of a cover from 'Rolling Stone' from 2011 which has the front cover model as Adele - the well known artist who appeals to a wide audience. I think they have done this to encourage more people to read the magazine as Adele is a very popular artist.

As you can see, the design style of the cover is quite minimalistic with only a few features on it. The photography which has been used is a close-up image suggesting that the audience should look there first, which could explain why there are only a few features included. On other previous covers, some of the photography used has been long-shots to connote maybe that the people on the front cover have power.

The front cover styles don't seem to follow any pattern with each edition apart from the iconic title and fonts. The straplines which have been used are short and snappy, which suggests that the way the magazine is communicating to its audience is persuasive - sort of demanding that they read it. Also, with each edition, the colour scheme always matches the title's colour. As you can see to the right, the title is blue and the celebrities on the front are all wearing clothes which match this colour. This has been done to make the magazine aesthetically pleasing for the consumer, which overall would make them more likely to purchase it.

The final aspect of the Rolling Stone magazine I would like to focus on is the contents. To the left is a picture of the magazine's contents page, which still continues with the red theme from some previous covers. The imagery theme is also still continued - focusing on the Rock side of the music industry and you can see this from the main image on the page. The two main features of the magazine have been put into a type of article instead of just in a list, and this has been done to attract the reader to them first. The rest of the features are in a simple list down the left hand side of the page, continuing with the font theme and colour scheme.

Overall, the Rolling Stone magazine uses many techniques in order to attract the consumer to their product. These techniques include the way they communicate with their audience by using persuasive language, the imagery they include which catch the consumer's attention, and finally the features they include in the magazine itself, which would encourage the reader to buy another edition.

My First Post

My name is Alice and I am 16 years old. I study at Prior Pursglove College and this is my first ever blog. I am creating this blog for my AS Media Coursework and it will display all of my work which I plan to create over the duration of the course. I tend to listen to 'Alternative' music and I plan to look at magazines such as The Fly and NME for inspiration during the creation of my blog as both magazines appeal to a wider audience and they include features about the type of music I like.
